January 18, 2012: Springtime in Central Asia, with Chris and Ken Havard.

Our birdwatching trip to Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan was a journey through wind-swept deserts and grasslands buttressed by steep mountains breaking the horizon. Migrating European birds added to the local specialties and the landscape was filled with the famous fields of red poppies, tulips, and myriads of other types of flowering species. The cities of Samarkhand and Bukhara contain UNESCO heritage sites protecting colourful tiled mosques and madrassahs with the famous blue domes.

November 16: Moose Mountain, Alberta: Exploring the Natural History of Canyon Creek and Area, presented by Dan Quinsey (Past President, Alberta Palaeontological Society).

The lure of the mountains and foothills is in us all. Most of us are familiar with the Upper and Lower Foothill regions of Alberta adjacent to the Rocky Mountains which together with the Rockies, are commonly referred to as the Eastern Slopes. The Foothills are not only home to some of the most interesting species in the province, they hold within them evidence of ancient times.

Uncovered within the Lower Foothill regions of Alberta are the Carboniferous and Jurassic formations along Canyon Creek, Moose Mountain where many geological and palaeontological wonders await to be experienced and discovered.

The objective of this talk is to offer fellow enthusiasts an opportunity to experience the magnificence of Canyon Creek, Moose Mountain. The focus will be on the geological and palaeontological features of the area, a brief survey of the exploration history, and a look at the common florae and fauna along the way. Read more at www.moosemountainalberta.com.

Dan Quinsey has been a member of the Alberta Palaeontological Society for over 10 years and currently holds the positions of Past President and Social Committee Chairperson. He has also served as President, Vice President, Secretary, Chair of the Public Outreach / Education Committee and representative of the Alberta Palaeontological Advisory Committee (APAC).
